What I really liked about them was that Joel didn't just take the position that good managers should just get out of the way. Instead, he starts with that principal, but then adds to it what a good manager needs to be doing.
For me, it serves as a nice reminder to focus on the right things. Sorry guys, code reviews are still what I consider the right thing ;-).
