What do you see when you look at this picture?

If you look at the above image of the incredibly light dusting of snow on one of our deck posts and think, "EMERGENCY!! Must go to Giant and buy milk, bread and toilet paper, and must cancel all activities for the rest of the day" then you're officially a Northern Virginian.

OK, so some nasty weather is scheduled to arrive at 3pm today. Does that mean we have to be in full lock down all day?

I love it here. But time after time the weather teaches us there's no reason to panic, and time after time we do.

  1. Yeah, I was shocked when I went to the grocery store last night to pick up a few things (not to stock up for the doomsday that is an inch of snow!), and there was no shortage of milk, and there were no long lines at the checkout.

From past experience, I was half-expecting to walk in the door, see the usual pandemonium of crazed shoppers buying all the milk, bread, TP, water, etc. they might ever need, and walk out because I didn't really need "a few things" THAT badly.

I guess people around here were either procrastinating, or starting to realize that 1 day of bad weather is not going to require them to hunker down in their home/death trap for a week or two. Emergency preparedness is a great idea (believe me, this has been ingrained in me, I'm both an Eagle Scout and a Mormon!), but isn't that really something you should deal with BEFORE the potential emergency arrives?

I did not check the toilet paper supply at the store. though, because we're all set (thanks to Amazon Subscribe and Save!).

I'm with you! We stopped by the store and there was a fair amount of activity, but the stress level seemed relatively low.

Exactly! Which one is it? I'm thinking procrastination.

Ahhh, truly brilliant! We should probably do this with TP and Paper Towels. Every time we finish a dozen rolls of paper towels I'm absolutely shocked. I guess I was expecting it would just last and last.

In defense of the area though, I should say that this was a pretty legitimate ice storm versus a wimpy snow storm. We did get lucky in that it warmed up beyond 32 degrees and stuff is melting. Had it stayed below 32 degrees, it would be awfully slick out there.
