Turns out, Wikipedia has a neat list of most of (all?) the monuments in D.C..
Before you next visit to the area, it's probably worth checking out.
For example, I had no idea that we had...
- An Emancipation Memorial that was constructed in 1876
- A Victims Of Communism Memorial - constructed so that "the history of communist tyranny will be taught to future generations"
- A Zero Milestone that was "intended as the initial milestone from which all road distances in the United States should be reckoned"
- A Women's Titanic Memorial that "in the 1997 film Titanic there is a scene in which Kate Winslet imitates the statue's pose on the bow of the Titanic."
- The Oscar Straus Memorial that "commemorates the accomplishments of the first Jew to serve in the Cabinet of a U.S. president."
Who knew?
If I had any free time, it would be fun to visit them all. For now, I'll have to be satisfied with a virtual visit.
