Yes, But is it Kosher?

One doesn't usually come across 5 layer dip that is marked kosher. It just doesn't happen. Cheese can be a tricky thing to certify (with the animal rennet and all), and lets face it, my people tend to know lox and whitefish, not guacamole and refried beans.

So when I came across this item at Trader Joes I was excited to see an SVK on it. This just might be an annotation marking this item as kosher.

But how is one to know?

Easy, just Google it while standing in the isle.

Sure enough, SVK stands for "Vaad Hakashuruth of Springfield."

And is described as a "non-profit organization guaranteeing that all products are in full compliance with Kosher standards."

Whooo! Kosher 5 layer dip.

Gosh I love Google. How did I ever function without it.

  2. Yes it was!

The good news is that it only has like 3 grams of fat per servering.

The bad news is that there are a whopping 22 servings packed into the container.

How do you know that SVK is a reliable symbol?
I do not see it listed either on kosherquest.org
    or on crcweb.org.

I was going by the description I found on the web, which seemed plausible to me.

For my purposes, that worked- though, YMMV.

Note that the website says " Disclaimer Please bear in mind that we cannot pass judgement on reliability. Kosher standards vary dramatically from agency to agency. You must ask your rabbi which agencies to rely upon."
